No-Prep Veneers — additive, without sacrificing your substance

Truly additive veneers without grinding — no hidden grinding, no "No-Prep-with-grinding-reality". You are not a spectator, you co-design your smile. We apply composite additively, you see the on-screen preview and try the planned shape directly in your mouth (Test Drive) before we treat definitively.

What are No-Prep Veneers — and is this right for you?

No-Prep means: no grinding of tooth substance — and with us, also no hidden "small" grinding that elsewhere happens under the No-Prep label anyway. We apply the veneer additively onto your existing tooth — from composite, in two layers like the natural tooth. What was there before, stays.

At Scan ’n’ Smile, additive is our standard. We don't promise you anything we cannot keep. We produce an on-screen preview for you before we treat. We show you the restoration in your mouth before we treat. Concretely: we scan with our Trios 4 by 3Shape, plan with SmileCloud and 3Shape Smile Design — you see your new smile before we start.

Then the Test Drive — we apply the planned shape provisionally onto your teeth, you feel it, you walk to the mirror with it, you say what should be different. Only when you agree do we treat definitively. Materials: GC G-aenial Injectable, Ivoclar Tetric, Ivoclar IPS Empress Direct.

If your clinical situation calls for classic veneers, Scan ’n’ Smile remains the framework — as a combination treatment, not a break. More on that below.

What you really want when you search for veneers

You probably aren't searching for "veneers", but for a smile you're happy with in photos. You don't want "a treatment", you want a result that looks natural and that doesn't bind you to an irreversible step for decades.

This is exactly where the additive route fits: when your teeth are already healthy, when the position is right, when you only want an improvement — then you do not need to sacrifice substance for it.

Imagine getting your new smile without anything having been removed. You first wear the planned shape as a trial (Test Drive), you feel it, you decide. If in five years you want something different, your substance is still there. You keep your freedom. That is exactly the heart of Scan ’n’ Smile.

Have you just finished aligners?

Position fits, shape doesn't yet? Then No-Prep is often exactly the right way — additive, without grinding. Orthodontics has done the position, we put the fine shape correction on top, without touching your freshly aligned teeth. More on this patient situation on its own indication landing page: Lengthen teeth after aligner.

When does No-Prep fit — and when do you need something else?

Combination treatment — when one route is not enough

Sometimes one route isn't enough. A front tooth with old dark discolouration needs ceramic, the neighbour only needs a small additive shape correction. This is not a stopgap — it is an intelligent combination, sequentially planned, without judgement. Example: one tooth gets a classic ceramic veneer (old dark discolouration), the neighbours are treated additively in composite — planned together under one mock-up, worn together as a trial in advance. We have the classic veneer manufactured individually from Ivoclar IPS Empress CAD or IPS e.max CAD in the dental laboratory (CEREC, inLab, exocad as workflow devices in the practice).

Scan ’n’ Smile remains the framework. Even in a combination treatment, you are not in a different practice — you are still inside the Scan ’n’ Smile concept. On-screen preview, Test Drive, you as co-designer, no step without your consent. Just because one tooth is treated differently, our way of dealing with you doesn't become classic-asymmetric.

How No-Prep works with us

Scan ’n’ Smile works additively — we apply composite onto your tooth without removing substance. We call this the Two-Layer Technique: a two-layer build-up like the natural tooth — inside a dense material for depth and colour (Ivoclar Tetric), outside a translucent material like natural enamel (Ivoclar IPS Empress Direct). This makes the veneer not look like a stuck-on shell, but like a natural tooth — even under sunlight and practice lighting.

1. Scan + on-screen preview — the Scan ’n’ Smile opening

We scan digitally with our intraoral scanner and plan the new shape with SmileCloud and 3Shape Smile Design based on your facial proportions, lip position and smile line. You see your planned new smile on screen before we do anything to the tooth.

2. Test Drive — smile fitting directly in the mouth (the heart of Scan ’n’ Smile)

We apply the planned shape provisionally onto your teeth — reversible, no removal of substance. You feel the new length and shape, you go to the mirror, you speak, you laugh. If something should be different: we adjust before we treat definitively.

3. Definitive Scan ’n’ Smile treatment

Only when you agree do we bond adhesively and layer the composites in two layers — the Two-Layer Technique as the conclusion of Scan ’n’ Smile. One session per 4–8 teeth, as a rule without anaesthesia needed.

What we use

What NEVER happens with us

  • "Supposed No-Prep" with hidden removal of substance — that does not exist with us. We always call the variant by its name, even when it's uncomfortable.
  • No pre-fabricated standard shells without individual planning
  • No high-pressure sales talks — "you need 8 veneers" — when 4 would suffice
  • No treatment without your "yes" after the Test Drive

Four points that set us apart from a classic veneer practice

Why 5 days are not enough — Test Drive needs time

Premium composite bonding is not finished in 5 days. The Test Drive — the provisional fitting of your planned tooth shape directly in your mouth — needs 1–2 weeks in which you live the new shape: while speaking, while laughing, while eating, in different lighting. Corrections often only come up through this living-with-it — when you look in the mirror in the morning, in conversation with the person who knows you well, in a photo under office lighting.

A complete Smile Makeover package in one week skips exactly this step — and with it the actual value of the concept. Without Test Drive time, all that's left is "the clinician decides, the patient accepts at the end". This is the classic asymmetry against which Scan ’n’ Smile is built. Therefore: two sessions, with living-with-it in between, then definitive. Not because we are slow — because faster is not better here.

Composite No-Prep or minimally invasive ceramic — when what?

Scan ’n’ Smile offers No-Prep in two variants — composite and ceramic. Both stay true to the additive core idea (no grinding / only an ultra-minimal grinding portion), but differ in optics, longevity and price.

Composite No-Prep (Scan ’n’ Smile standard)

  • One day, one session, fully reversible, fair pricing
  • 5–10 years longevity, repairable and refreshable
  • Enamel stays untouched — you can go back at any time
  • Ideal for: a test wave, young patients, moderate shape correction, a budget-conscious decision

Minimally invasive ceramic (premium variant)

  • Glass ceramic from dental laboratories (Ivoclar IPS Empress CAD or e.max CAD; CEREC and inLab as workflow devices in the practice)
  • 15–25 years longevity, abrasion- and stain-resistant
  • Optically the highest standard — the depth effect and light dynamics of glass ceramic are often superior to composite
  • Ideal for: premium expectations, on-camera profession, weddings, high staining exposure

Plain words on grinding: a true No-Prep treatment is almost exclusively possible in composite. High-quality ceramic veneers normally require an ultra-minimal grinding portion (typically 0.3–0.5 mm) for stability and adhesion — significantly more enamel-sparing than classic veneer preparation, but not true No-Prep. We say this honestly. Providers who write "No-Prep" across the board on every ceramic restoration are, as a rule, still preparing — we always call the variant by its name.

Hybrid restoration — we often combine composite and ceramic in the same smile (e.g. central incisors in ceramic, laterals in composite). Which route fits for you we decide together after the on-screen preview and the Test Drive — co-designer also in the choice of materials.

What the science says

Show studies, figures & sources

Methodological foundation of our Two-Layer Technique: Bazos P, Magne P. Bio-Emulation: a step toward biology-based esthetic dentistry. Eur J Esthet Dent 2011;6:8-19. PMID 21403924. For more than ten years a standard for aesthetically high-quality direct veneers. Prof. Dr. Daniel Edelhoff (LMU Munich) has conducted research on the material properties of composite polymers vs. ceramic, which feeds directly into our indication decisions.

Own research of the clinician team

Dr. Sebastian Zwinge himself published at LMU Munich under Prof. Edelhoff on the optical properties of dental polymers:

Güth JF, Zuch T, Zwinge S, Engels J, Stimmelmayr M, Edelhoff D: Optical properties of manually and CAD/CAM-fabricated polymers. Dental Materials Journal 2013; 32(6): 865–871. PMID 24240888.

The study compared light translucency and fluorescence of polymer materials with glass ceramic — exactly the question that has to be answered for every No-Prep veneer indication decision.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference to Lumineers?
Lumineers are a brand variant of ultra-thin ceramic shells, pre-fabricated to standard dimensions, in the brand provider's laboratory. We work primarily additively with composite — entirely without a shell, entirely without grinding. Where ceramic is clinically necessary (combination treatment), we have it made individually from Ivoclar IPS Empress CAD or e.max CAD in the dental laboratory — after a digital scan and individual in-house planning.
I have old veneers — can you replace them?
Yes. If your old veneers no longer hold, have discoloured or the shape no longer fits, we replace them. What lies underneath (ground or unground substance) determines the method: on an unground base, additive replacement is often possible; on already prepared substance we typically renew with ceramic veneers from dental laboratories.
Why doesn't this take 5 days?
Because the Test Drive needs time. You wear the planned shape provisionally in your mouth for 1–2 weeks — while speaking, while laughing, while eating, in different lighting. Corrections often only come up through this living-with-it. Premium bonding isn't "better by being faster", it's "better by being more thoroughly considered".
How long do No-Prep Veneers last?
Composite direct veneers (additive): typically 5–10 years, often longer, fully repairable — when something chips off, we add to it locally without redoing everything. For combination treatments with a ceramic share: ceramic veneers 10–15 years.
Do you really do veneers without grinding?
Yes — additive is our standard, and we mean No-Prep honestly, with no hidden "small" grinding. Precondition: your teeth and your clinical situation allow for it. Where your clinical situation needs classic veneers (combination treatment), we communicate this clearly in advance — and you decide.
What does it cost?

Statutory health-insurance treatment is possible — the prices below refer to the Scan ’n’ Smile private treatment (No-Prep premium, no Turkey-bulk):

  • No-Prep composite veneers (4–8 teeth, additive): €2,000–€4,500
  • Smile Makeover composite (8–12 teeth, additive): €3,200–€5,500
  • Combination treatment with ceramic share (with a clear indication): individually from €4,500

We agree the additional cost for the higher-quality adhesive treatment (Two-Layer layering, on-screen preview + Test Drive with 1–2 weeks of living with it, in-house lab production for the ceramic share) individually with you via a private cost agreement (MKV). All prices are non-binding ranges. Binding treatment and cost plan after clinical assessment.

Are the veneers reversible?
For pure No-Prep: yes — composite veneers without removal of substance are reversible. For combination treatments with a ceramic share, the ceramic tooth is not reversible, the additive part remains so.
Does it hurt?
We decide on anaesthesia individually — based on the clinical situation and your comfort wish. With pure No-Prep composite the treatment is often possible without anaesthesia, because we don't grind. For combination treatments with a ceramic share we work on the ceramic tooth with local anaesthesia for comfort. We discuss this with you before every treatment.
Does statutory health insurance cover anything?
Statutory health-insurance treatment is possible — Scan ’n’ Smile is our premium treatment with on-screen preview, Test Drive and Two-Layer Technique. We agree the additional cost for the higher-quality adhesive treatment individually with you via a private cost agreement (MKV). We clarify the private share transparently before treatment. Where there are existing carious lesions or insufficient restorations, or clinically justified loss of substance, a statutory dental fee schedule (BEMA) share may arise after clinical assessment.
