Smoothies, energy drinks, sports drinks, reflux, plenty of balsamic — modern lifestyle habits attack tooth enamel. At Scan ’n’ Smile we rebuild the lost enamel additively — without grinding. You set the pace, you decide every step.
Acid-related enamel damage often leads to increased tooth sensitivity — temperature- and food-related stimuli trigger pain or pulling, because the protective enamel has become thinner. The causes today are often lifestyle-related: regular smoothies, energy drinks, sports drinks, cola, apple cider vinegar, lemon water or high consumption of acidic marinades (balsamic, salad dressings). Reflux and heartburn — even unnoticed at night — also belong here.
At Scan ’n’ Smile in Straßlach-Dingharting / Munich South, we treat this additively — we give back what the acid has taken from your teeth. We follow the 3-Step Technique after Vailati & Belser, scan with our Trios 4 from 3Shape, plan with SmileCloud (on-screen preview), apply the planned shape directly inside your mouth as a trial (Test Drive — smile try-on directly in the mouth, reversible) and only then, after your approval, build it up definitively layer by layer — in the Two-Layer Technique. No grinding. No crowns. Reversible and repairable. You don't have to give anything up — we restore the tooth in such a way that it is protected again.
Acid dissolves enamel — that's the visible part. The invisible part is the chain that arises from it: thin enamel, shorter incisal edges, lowered bite height. This changes how your jaw closes. Over months and years, this strains the temporomandibular joint and the chewing muscles — tension, clicking, sometimes headaches.
Your digestion is affected too. Breakdown begins in the mouth — and not only mechanically. Salivary enzymes (above all α-amylase) start the breakdown of food while it is still between the teeth. If the teeth become shorter and the bite flatter, chewing is less thorough, the saliva can act less, less broken-down food residue ends up in the stomach — which puts additional strain on the gastrointestinal tract.
Add to this the sensitivity in everyday life — the first sip of coffee, ice cream in summer, cold air when jogging — and the aesthetic downside, the smile that looks different in the mirror than it did a few years ago.
Imagine biting into an apple unworried again, your jaw joint working calmly, and your smile having the length it had a few years ago. That is exactly where we will take you — additive, without grinding, at your pace.
The right time is now — while there is still enough of your own substance left. As long as your enamel has merely become thinner, we can build additively — additive, no grinding, fully repairable. If you wait until teeth are structurally lost, an additive rebuild becomes a root canal treatment, a crown, in extreme cases an implant.
If you recognise yourself in two or more points: let's talk. In the free first consultation we'll clarify whether an additive rebuild is right for you.Book online
With our AI tool, you can use a photo of your front teeth to make visible where lifestyle acid has already attacked the enamel — supplementary information ahead of the first consultation.
Note: the image is an aid and serves your information. It does not replace a detailed clinical analysis.
Acid exposure affects all teeth in a similar way, regardless of the source: the enamel becomes thinner, the incisal edges shorten, the dentin becomes more sensitive, temperature and food stimuli suddenly produce a pulling sensation.
Our concept for this is called Scan ’n’ Smile — additive, without grinding, with maximum preservation of your remaining substance. It links four steps into one continuous treatment experience: digital scan with on-screen preview → Test Drive of the planned shape directly in your mouth → definitive build-up in our Two-Layer Technique → discreet referral to gastroenterological or therapeutic support on request. The methodological basis is the internationally established 3-Step Technique after Vailati & Belser (University Dental Medicine of Geneva, since 2005).
We discuss your drinking and eating habits — no moral judgement, only the factual situation. We digitally scan your current findings on a micrometre level with our intraoral scanner and plan with SmileCloud how your teeth can be restored. You see the on-screen preview before we do anything to the tooth.
We apply the planned result provisionally to your teeth — you feel how it feels, you speak, you smile, you go to the mirror. If something doesn't fit, we change it before anything is definitive. You set the pace.
Only when you agree does the Scan ’n’ Smile definitive build-up start: layer by layer additively, in our Two-Layer Technique — a dense material on the inside for depth and colour (Ivoclar Tetric), a translucent material on the outside like natural enamel (Ivoclar IPS Empress Direct). This way, the rebuild does not look "stuck on", but like your own teeth — and the exposed dentin area is sealed again, the sensitivity clearly subsides.
Where reflux is suspected, we recommend a gastroenterological assessment. With night-time grinding or pronounced acid exposure, we make a protective splint for the night. If, in parallel, you need medical or therapeutic support — of whatever kind — we refer, on request, to the German Society of Psychosomatic Medicine (DGPM) or other contact points in the Munich area. Discreet, without pressure.
Scan ’n’ Smile with composite is our fast, additive, enamel-friendly and repairable variant — perfect for moderate acid exposure. If your acid exposure has progressed over years, or if you want maximum longevity and the highest optical quality, we offer ceramic restorations as a second pillar — minimally invasive as an onlay/overlay veneer, not as a full crown.
Advantages of ceramic: optically higher-grade, longevity 15–25 years instead of 5–10, acid- and abrasion-resistant. Material from dental laboratories (CEREC and inLab as workflow devices in the practice) — Ivoclar IPS Empress CAD for smile design, Ivoclar IPS e.max CAD for the highest load-bearing capacity.
Hybrid treatment possible — composite on front teeth, ceramic on back teeth. Which route suits you we'll decide together after preview and Test Drive.
The 3-Step Technique after Vailati & Belser has been established in university dental medicine since 2005. Prof. Dr. Daniel Edelhoff (LMU Munich) has clinically further developed the concept — additive treatment in cases of substance loss, without preparation. Methodological basis of our Two-Layer Technique: Bazos P, Magne P. Bio-Emulation: a step toward biology-based esthetic dentistry. Eur J Esthet Dent 2011;6:8-19. PMID 21403924.
Dr. Sebastian Zwinge has himself published, at LMU Munich under Prof. Edelhoff, on the optical properties of dental polymers:
Güth JF, Zuch T, Zwinge S, Engels J, Stimmelmayr M, Edelhoff D: Optical properties of manually and CAD/CAM-fabricated polymers. Dental Materials Journal 2013; 32(6): 865–871. PMID 24240888.
Statutory cover is available — the prices below refer to the Scan-&-Smile private treatment. We grade by extent:
The additional cost for the higher-quality adhesive treatment (3-Step Technique, Two-Layer build-up, preview + Test Drive) we agree individually via a private cost agreement (MKV). All prices are non-binding ranges. Binding treatment plan after clinical assessment. Private share set out transparently before treatment.
The earlier we treat, the less we have to treat. As long as your enamel has merely become thinner, we can build additively.
